Alumni Piasck of Dream
Limousine Runs for Honorary Mayor
Running for Honorary Mayor is
a tradition in Brandon. The tradition dates back to the ‘50’s
when Nat Storms was the first mayor. Every vote counts and every
vote costs $1.00. The person with the most votes wins the race
and becomes Brandon’s representative throughout the year
with their first appearance in the July 4th parade. This year,
one of our alumni, Jake Piasck, co-owner of Dream Limousine and
Anytime Taxi and graduate of Leadership Brandon Class of 2007 has
decided to run. He has pulled his planning committee together and
has several events already scheduled. Jake is being sponsored by
Brandon ’86 Rotary where he is on the Board of Directors.
When
running for Honorary Mayor, 80% of the proceeds go to pre-selected
charities by the candidate. Ten percent go to the sponsoring organization
and 10% go to the Presidents’ Roundtable, the organization
that runs the race. Jake has selected Emergency Care Help Organization
(ECHO), A Kid’s Place (an emergency children’s shelter)
and the Trey Curry Foundation as his three charities.
Watch local
papers for events in June and if you want to contribute and see
another alumni become Honorary Mayor, call Jake at 813-892-0096.
Leadership
Alumni Association now has a photographer to take pictures for our events.
Please be sure and give Aubrey Primrose, class of 2007, a big cheesy
smile when you see her at our next event. We want to make sure
you get your mug on our website!
Congratulations
to fellow alumni George May (Class of 2001) on becoming the new
Honorary Mayor of Brandon. George
May was born in Opelika, Alabama and raised in Mobile, Alabama.
He attended University of South Alabama and has a degree in Civil
Engineering. He moved to Tampa in January of 1990 and then to Brandon,
Jan 1992. He is an independent financial adviser and opened his
own office (American Investment Advisors of Brandon) in Brandon
October 1995. He has been an extremely active member of the Greater
Brandon Chamber of Commerce, including being a past board chair.
His hobbies include golf, volunteering, and performing as one of
the Brandon Blues Brothers.
George won the Honorary Mayor’s
race by raising more than $20,000 and distributing it to charities
in the Greater Brandon area including Boy Scout Troop 110, the
Brandon Community Foundation and the Brandon Outreach Clinic.
The
Honorary Mayor’s race is produced by the Presidents’ Roundtable
Charities of Brandon. The race begins in June and lasts until the
morning of July 4th. The candidate raising the most money becomes
Honorary Mayor of Brandon for a year; attending ribbon cuttings,
grand openings and reading proclamations at special events.
Congratulations
to our new board members! See their pictures and bios
on the board
of directors page.

Association
Presents Check to Red Cross: In March, the Leadership Brandon Alumni
Association had its inaugural Mardi Gras Mamba at Winthrop. All
proceeds were designated to be given to hurricane Katrina victims.
The Association raised $1233 and presented Red Cross representative
Maxine Harper a check at the board meeting on May 30th.
Helping make
a difference in one family’s life: Leadership Brandon Alumni sent
a representative to a $150.00 a plate dinner in Ruskin to help
fund the building of a home needed to keep eight children from
being dispersed throughout the state. Their mother being murdered,
these children were taken in by their aunt. Due to the rules and
regulations of the state, it is a requirement that so many square
feet be available for each child. Unable to provide that amount
of living space, the aunt sought help in her community. The public
pulled together and found numerous donors for building materials
and support. Leadership Brandon Alumni was proud to be a supporter.
